Video, installation, animation
Here are some things that I made in university. They're not representative of what I do now, but there is some conenction and I like to have them here for archival purposes.
Spectral Electrical
A journey through invisible and inaudible layers of everyday reality to realize that nothing is ever quiet. Composition of ectromagnetic sounds (captured with a pick-up phone coil) of objects that can be found in a house (microwaves, ovens, computers, cellphones, TV sets, DVD players, computers, washing machines, etc.).
Experimental video by Catarina João, 2011.
Repointing Audition
Nothing looks the way it sounds. Nothing sounds the way it
looks.
- Christina Kubisch
The sounds captured belong to what is in frame but set in a different time of the day, the familiar sounds become uncanny in the deserted landscape and the video becomes an eerie portrait of a city lost in time, resembling a ghost town.
Experimental video by Catarina João and Adrianne Chardonnais, 2012.
Panopticon
There are infinitely more images than those we can see and this overdose of information hipnotizes and alienates from the world. In this installation, six television sets form a circle, the observer staying in the center. In these screens, a sequence of images of every kind (edited excerpts of cinema, tv, publicity, typically youtube videos) keeps getting faster ad faster. The observer trades places with what is observed and becomes prisioner of the images.
This video serves as a recording of the installation by Catarina João, 2011.
(This one is cute in retrospective. On one hand, I was definitely onto something. On the other, my version was very tame in comparison to what would be.)
